Musk oxen, native to arctic regions, are best known for their thick coats and for the males’ strong odor. Males have a scent gland under their eyes that leaves a deep musky odor when they rub against tree branches or bushes. These huge animals—they can weigh up to 900 pounds—spend their summers in low-lying wetlands but move to higher elevations in winter to escape deep snowfalls. They graze on plants like grasses, reeds, and sedges; in winter they have to dig through snow and ice to reach food and water. Musk oxen typically live in herds of fifteen animals but it’s not uncommon for herds to grow to as big as 100. Males are really protective of their herds. When they feel threatened, the bulls form a protective ring around the females and babies.
