Muntjacs are one of the oldest known species of deer. Also called Barking Deer because of their peculiar barking that can go on for hours and hours, muntjacs live in the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia. Giant Muntjacs, about the size of a large dog, were only discovered in northern Vietnam in 1994, but have since been spotted numerous times in the mountains between Laos and Vietnam. Males have small antlers (females just have bony knobs) that they shed between March and April and then re-grow by August or September. Muntjacs are relatively adaptable and can eat almost any kind of vegetation they find—from grasses to fruit, including nuts, berries, and flowers. They are solitary creatures and tend to avoid people.
