Chad + Chana Coyote
Traveling canines with distinctive howls, barks, and yelps

You’re more likely to hear a coyote than see one. Coyotes’ calls are a distinctive high-pitched series of howls, barks, huffs, and yelps that change in pitch. Coyotes are relatives of the domestic dog and are only found in North America. They have long, pointed jaw lines and bushy tails. Coyotes mate for life; both the mother and father help feed the young pups. After six months the pups are on their own. Adult coyotes live and hunt alone or in monogamous pairs. They roam far and wide in search of food. They eat rabbits and mice, as well as fruits and grasses. Coyotes hear and smell very well—skills they use to detect food and danger. Their fur often has many varied colors and may appear mottled. Coyotes are remarkably adaptable. They can change their diets, breeding habits, and social structure to match the climate in which they find themselves. That’s probably why they have enlarged their territory since humans moved in. Last year one even found its way to Central Park in New York City!
